Cu o populatie de numai 5 milioane locuitori, Singapore este un adevarat miracol economic. Caracterizata ca fiind cea mai deschisa economie din lume si beneficiind de un regim de taxare foarte competitiv, Singapore are al treilea cel mai mare produs intern brut per locuitor din lume. Extrem de diversificata chiar fata de alte economii din regiune, Singapore exporta masiv electronice, echipamente industriale, produse chimice, farmaceutice, bunuri si servicii pentru consum. Este cel mai important centru pentru piata petrolului din Asia, detinand a treia cea mai mare capacitate de rafinare din lume. Genereaza, totodata, excedente de cont curent uriase - de aproape 20% relativ la produsul intern brut in fiecare an - ceva foarte rar intalnit la nivel global.
